Ave! Konichiwa! Hello!

My name is Anton and I have many hobbies and interest that I love. They include things like reading books, studying history, learning about cultures, playing football, and playing games. I am the type of person who thinks more than acts, and when I do act, it is not without thinking it through first. I am constantly pondering and questioning things, processing all sorts of information at the speed of light within my brain. But enough of that, the following few paragraphs will discuss further the interests and hobbies I named above.

I just finished a series called “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R.R. Martin and I believe it to be one of the best fantasy works of all time, rivaling that of Lord of the Rings. However, it is still new, but I hope it catches on with people. The series is a masterpiece, referred to by the Denver Post as “destined to be one of the best fantasy series ever written.” The series takes place in a fictional universe following a medieval setting and includes aspects of adventure, romance, and tragedy all into one magnificent piece of art (if you can call literature art)

Reading has always been one of my best past-times. I thoroughly enjoyed the Redwall series by Brian Jacques, which instead of human characters, everyone is a different creature. I also liked reading Ilium and its sequel, Olympos, by Dan Simmons. He takes us 2,000 years into the future, giving us a grisly look at what life could be like following a major global disaster, while also including quantum physics, the Battle of Troy, and the Greek gods into the picture. Roma Eterna is a similar fiction by Robert Silverberg, showing us what it might be like had the Roman Empire never fell. Fantasy and sci-fi novels really hold my attention and I love being pulled into a different world outside of our own, but dystopian novels strike my fancy just the same. I love reading about a “utopia” gone wrong, such as in Ayn Rand’s Anthem and Alduous Huxley’s Brave New World. If it were possible to log all my reading hours, the amount of pages I’ve read, and the amount of words, I’d sure to love to see where I rank.

History has also been one of my main interests. I’ve taken to heart the famous proverb, “those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.”  The Ancient Romans and Ancient Greeks have also been my area of study. Nothing fascinates me more than how life was all those years ago. On a broader scale, the Ancient World is also an area where I can enjoy studying. Just think, the dawn of civilization…. what a concept! If there was one thing I would want to do, it would be to record history for eternity after I die. I got that idea from Ilium, where the narrator has been tasked with doing just that. One can dream, can’t they?

Another thing I like to do is travel. I like experiencing different cultures than our own and taking part in their traditions and rituals. It amazes me how differently cultures develop from one another. I suppose this interest is the product of being in Japanese Immersion from 1st-10th grade, learning the language and culture. I’ve grown to love it and was fortunate enough to visit Japan over this past summer. My, what a beautiful place! I plan to do a lot more traveling in my life time. I still have a lot more places to go. I’ve been cooped up in the United States most all my life and I have the need to see something more.

I’ve never really been into baseball, I just don’t find it that interesting. But football is where I found my love of sports. The game is very physical but requires a mental aspect as well, requiring offenses to find holes in the defense and to exploit those holes in order to score points. My team, my pride and joy, is the Buccaneers of Tampa, Florida. The Tampa defense from 1996-2008 can be considered one of the best defenses in the history of the NFL, and when they won the Super Bowl in 2002, I was overjoyed with the greatest feeling in the world. Its 2009 now, and despite their 1-10 record, there is hope for the future. There are many young players that will be good for years to come. It is my expectation that Tampa will bring home another Lombardi Trophy in the future.

And finally, I wouldn’t be giving you the full spectrum if I had no mentioned my love for games. I’m a gamer, and have always been. I enjoy FPSs, RTS games, RPG’s, and MMO’s all the same. They all are designed for a purpose, I think, and can stimulate the mind. FPS’s develop your hand-eye coordination, RTS games help you work on problem-solving strategies, RPG’s immense you in a whole another universe, and MMO’s provide an online community that functions much the same as your local community. Games I’ve been a big fan of:

  • Halo
  • Counterstrike
  • Call of Duty
  • Empire Earth
  • Civilization
  • Total War series
  • Age of Empires
  • Elder Scrolls
  • Fallout
  • Dragone Age: Origins
  • World of Warcraft

There have of course been other games (too many) and games in development that I am excited about. It doesn’t matter to me if its on a PC or a game console, I just love games.

All of these hobbies define a part of me. Thank you for reading.
